Freshers is the perfect opportunity to meet new people in a new city

The University of Worcester has taken the idea of a “freshers’ week” and turned it into a whole month, which actually started on the 30 August! But don’t worry, you haven’t missed out, as there are events running right up until Friday the 23 September.

Karaoke, sports, clubbing, film, quizzes, live music – the list is truly endless, which means there will be something for almost anyone to get their teeth stuck into.
Freshers is one of the main events on the university calendar no matter where you are, but Worcester have really kicked it up a notch.

If you’re nervous about moving to an unfamiliar city, freshers is the best way to get involved. While there are several ways you will meet new people at university, through your accommodation or your course, for example, freshers will get you talking to people straight away.

Below are just some of the main events taking place over an action-packed couple of weeks.

Main events: Friday 9 – Monday 12 September

The most important event of the weekend is the Welcome Fair, a must-not miss for new students! The Welcome Fair is your way of finding out more about the clubs and societies available to join. It takes place on Saturday 10 September, and could define your time at university.

Representatives from the more than 75 clubs and societies will be there to share the most important information about their organisations, and you are welcome to join any of those that interest you. From anime & manga to history and American football, there will be something there to pique your interest.

Other than the welcome fair, there is a ‘sports circuit’ taking place on Friday 9 September, where students can try their hand at several different sports in the purpose-built sports arena. Or why not go for a Sunday stroll on the 11 September for a walking tour of Worcester with the Residential Life team?

Alternatively, join in the city campus picnic to explore the place you will call home for the next few years, and get the chance to meet new people in the same boat!

Main events: Tuesday 13 – Friday 16 September

One of the main events for the following week is the Colour Run on 14 September, where you can run, jog, or walk around your new campus while covered head-to-toe in powdered paint. This event isn’t just for fun, it’s also for charity, with all the money raised going to the university’s chosen organisation.

On September 13, there will be a general knowledge quiz night (with a cash prize!) at The Hangar Bar all evening. Assemble a team for a bit of fun with the chance to win some cash – what’s not to love?

Or, feeling a bit more professional? Consider the 60-minute workshop with motivational author Stefanie Sword-Williams on how you can “Network Your Way to the Top”.

Main events: Saturday 17 – Friday 23 September

The final few days of the Worcester welcome event will have taster sessions of several different sports, including rounders, badminton, table tennis, and basketball.

Evening activities for the week include a club night, quiz night, cocktail (and mocktail!) night, and live music event which will all help provide some insight into the nightlife of the city.

From there, you can focus on your studies and on maintaining your relationships. You’ll have met a lot of new people throughout the first few weeks of your university life, and now it’s time to built on that.
